In A Glitch in the Ren-AI-ssance, I am communicating the incompatible yet harmonious intersection between two periods—the old world and the modern world. The old world is embodied in the content, which compiles video clips and AI-generated images inspired by the Dark Ages, the Renaissance, and the Medieval period. Meanwhile, traces of the modern world are evident in the glitch aesthetic and process.
The concept of these worlds being incompatible stems from these older periods feeling so separate from how we are now; I imagine if our societies were to interact, there would be chaos and confusion. In this respect, the glitch shows the dissonance between two competing periods. However, in breaking the barriers between lands distanced by time, the glitch also creates a sense of harmony as this intentional corruption marries the two worlds and gives dated aesthetics new life through modern technology.
As I conceptualized my theme, I found myself drawn to images primarily depicting knights and old paintings, and thought that glitching images from a time devoid of technology would be interesting. During my process, I generated AI images inspired by Renaissance paintings, and I also took some of my artwork and sketches that emanated an old-world vibe and put them into AI to generate similar images. The majority of the difficulties I encountered were through creating real glitches using Text Edit and Audacity glitches, as my images kept getting cut in half, so I resorted to glitching my images using Photoshop, and data-moshing a few videos. I am most proud of my data-moshed videos since I was able to time the glitches perfectly on a few occasions, such as the head bonk blooming on the Monty Python video. That moment is my favorite thing to come out of this project.
What I would do differently next time is refine what I’m communicating and be more selective about my curation; most of my content unintentionally depicted bodies and battles, which skewed the interpretation to be about suffering. In reality, I just wanted to glitch knights and Renaissance-like images.
