Project 1: Zines

Artist Statement:

In my zine, I depict a narrative that follows the adventure of an artist after she gets pulled into the “painted world.” The male figure that she is painting comes to life and brings her into his world inside the canvas, which they explore together through different paintings from history before the artist has to return to the real world. The idea of transition from one world to another fit well with this assignment because the painted world was mostly done in Illustrator while the real world was created in Photoshop. While I was making the artwork, I learned about some of the differences between how Photoshop and Illustrator operated, and how I find Photoshop more difficult while Illustrator is more fun to work with.

My final artwork didn’t deviate much from my original plan; from the start, I knew the story that I wanted to tell, and the only changes that I made revolved around the details that I added to each page, which naturally developed as I was working. In my story, I am trying to communicate a sense of adventure and the fun of exploring a different world apart from reality. I believe this is successfully communicated through the zine, as it follows a narrative structure that starts in the real world, goes to the painted world, and comes back to reality. If I were to do anything differently, I would explore Photoshop more; I found Photoshop to be intimidating because of how much it can do, so if I were to do this project again, I would familiarize myself more with the different features Photoshop has to offer. I would also fix some imperfections because I have perfectionist tendencies, but I tried to set those aside for this project.
