Project 4 artist statement

For my webadventure, I wanted to create a creepy closet that acts as a point-and-click adventure game, where you click on items in order to form a narrative and find keys to be revealed certain “endings” relating to the story of the closet. The overall idea is that the user is playing as a murderer, Blake Williams, who is exploring his closet the day after he kills a person named “Alex.” Through the exploration of certain items, it is suggested that Blake was obsessively stalking Alex and that they had some sort of close relationship, which resulted in Alex’s disappearance. I also created many different digital drawings to go along with the strange actions that the user can do to add to the disturbed nature of Blake as a character.

My overall concept didn’t change much from my original idea; I knew I wanted to create a closet that had items relating to a murder and that the murderer was going to interact in weird ways with the objects to creep out the user. The only thing that changed was that the story became a lot more elaborate than I originally intended because as I was working on the project, I realized that I could expand on the story more and I was having fun developing these characters and seeing how deep the lore goes. I ended up creating at least 80 pages as a result of this, and I made more drawings than I intended to, but I also learned during the process of this project that when I have a solid plan, I can produce content pretty quickly, so I was able to create a variety of drawings without the project becoming overwhelming. Because of all of this, I believe the project was very successful, and that it turned out better than I thought.

I learned a lot about website creation while making this, and that making a cool website is not that difficult once you know the basics of linking to other pages. I also learned that GIFs can be made using photoshop, and that the concept is pretty similar to animation, but faster. I wouldn’t do any major things differently if I were to do this again, but I would nitpick the small details such as the borders of some of my photoshopped images not being very clean.

Here are the locations of certain easter eggs/references/jokes we didn’t get to in class:

  • Insane clown posse poster

  • Beanie text

  • Clicking “no” for certain items (such as the gloves, pills, and vacuum)

  • There’s more to the phone conversation
